Mader’s
Mader’s opened in 1902 when a porterhouse steak cost 20 cents, and a stein of beer was three. The tables and chairs were rough and wobbly, and one lone fan spun from the hot tin ceiling.
Prohibition struck in 1920, and Charles Mader wrote in his window, “Prohibition is at hand. Prepare for the worst. Stock up now! Today and tomorrow there’s beer. Soon there will only be the lake.”
Mader’s wife, Celia, decided to focus entirely on German cuisine: Sauerbraten, Wiener Schnitzel, and Pork Shank.
Celia’s fast thinking kept the place open until April 7th, 1933, when Prohibition was ended and “Mader’s was there to serve the first legal stein of beer in Milwaukee.”
With over 100 years of experience, Mader’s remains family-owned and operated. Today, patrons can experience the heritage preserved inside the historic establishment. A full-scale replica of Mader’s original storefront can be found in “The Streets of Old Milwaukee” exhibit at the Milwaukee Public Museum.

Carson’s Prime Steaks & Famous Barbecue of Milwaukee
Dean Carson is a third-generation Carson Chicagoan. The family has had their hand in the restaurant industry since the 1930s. Carson’s was established more than 40 years ago with one objective – “serve large portions of great food at an honest price.”
Dean has large shoes to fill and promises to keep satisfied Carson’s customers for years to come. The mindset remains as honest as the recipes to give patrons the same great taste every time they visit.
If you look around the restaurant, you will find people “talking, laughing, and enjoying the timeless tradition of a meal at Carson’s.” This observation reminds Carson that his main task is “to honor the legacy and reputation” created by years of satisfied guests.
